Program and Activities

All people, regardless of abilities, should have access to, choice of, and an opportunity to participate in a full range of community activities. Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (DD) exhibit less community participation, fewer social relationships, and lower leisure and employment participation. Despite these limitations, individuals with DD have the capacity to participate in a range of community activities when provided the opportunity and appropriate supports.

Community integration for individuals with DD should occur across the lifespan, from infancy throughout the aging process. The community roles and activities will vary depending on the stage of the individual’s life and his or her interests. Community integration programs involve a team approach that can include the client, family members & caregivers, community members, health care & educational professionals, community organization staff, and governmental agency staff, among others.

To ensure that all participants have the opportunity to participate in the community, Spring of Life will establish monthly activity calendars. The calendars will be developed with individual input and interest. Each month, individuals will be asked about community activities they wish to participate in, and this information will be captured on the monthly calendar. In addition, staff will provide individuals with community activities to expand community awareness. A variety of events will be captured on the calendar each month will also include activities related to an individual’s religion, culture, and gender.
